Tron: Legacy
Okay for those who know me well, I am a big sci-fi/fantasy nerd. So I was excited to learn that one of my friends, besides my best friend wanted to see this movie. Now granted, I wasn't even born when the first one came out but still I thought the concept was intriguing especially for the time. Anyways, I knew the special effects were going to be the tour de force in this movie because I watched a clip on Hulu of an effects test a year before the movie came out. (Not going to lie - part of the reason why I was intrigued by this movie was because of Chuck but I wanted to see it nonetheless.)
And I wasn't disappointed by the effects, except for the whole "younger" version of Jeff Bridges. I like the technology because it looks like fun to make a motion capture avatar and make it look younger or otherwise. I think the director and editor knew that people might have an issue with having the "young" Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) being on the screen too long in the real world. You only see him for a couple of seconds, maybe a minute of that version of Kevin Flynn at the beginning when he's talking to his son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund plays the older version, not sure the actor's name of the young kid) about Tron. I liked how they opened with that since it gave a very brief overview of what happened in the first movie, because you know it's been over 25 years since it came out and it's a hard one to find. Once we got to the part on the Grid (the game area and the most CG effected), I was okay with having CLU looking like a young version of Kevin Flynn. There were some parts such as when he was explaining why he was stuck there and couldn't make it back that I could tell it was CG, but you can't win at everything.
The effects weren't the only thing I liked about this movie - I found the soundtrack by Daft Punk fitting for the movie since it gave that futuristic and electronic vibe to the movie. I liked the cinematography, although it was mainly blue and orange but again it set up the tone of the movie. Editing was good, kept a good pace throughout but I wasn't too keen on the ending. It kind of took me off guard since they made the ending not an open ended one. So, I'm not sure if they ever decide to make another sequel because some of the characters will not be in it.
Overall: 4 of out of 5 stars - I was entertained but I did have some issues watching, yet still a good sci-fi movie with amazing effects.
Not sure if I did well with this review, but I will get the other two movie reviews up: The King's Speech and True Grit; as well as my random Illustrator fun. :)
Yeah I didn't like the young Jeff bridges look either. I think that since Sam downloaded the tron program, he could bring his dad back or another electronic version of him. That's what the geeky fan inside of me thinks :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are off to a good start with your film reviews!
No that's a good idea - I didn't think of that. Well, I thought about how it could possibly be re-integrated into the program but didn't think that Sam would do it. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! I have yet to post a comment for your China posts but I like them so far.
